Sitar legend Ravi Shankar dies at 92

His music transcended trends and cultural barriers. Pandit Ravi Shankar's life, which traversed nearly a century, ended Tuesday.
The legendary sitar player, who taught Beatle George Harrison how to play the stringed instrument and brought Indian music to the West, passed away at age 92 in the early evening in San Diego, near his home, according to his wife, Sukanya, and daughter Anoushka Shankar, who were by his side.
Shankar was the father of jazz singer Norah Jones as well. He is also survived by three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, according to his record label, East Meets West Music.
His health had suffered over the past year, according to a statement from his record label, and he underwent heart valve replacement surgery last Thursday.

"Unfortunately, despite the best efforts of the surgeons and doctors taking care of him, his body was not able to withstand the strain of the surgery," his wife and daughter said.
In the 1960s, he took Eastern music mainstream in the West. He lent ethereal, spiritual sounds to the Fab Four through his friendship with Harrison, who recorded them on the "Sgt. Pepper's" album in the song "Within You Without You."
Virtuoso performances at Monterey in 1967 and Woodstock in 1969 helped cement Shankar's place in Western musical history as an ambassador of Eastern wisdom to a generation looking for new values.
"Ravi was a great loss musically, spiritually and physically. God bless to Ravi's family. Peace & Love," Beatle Ringo Starr said in a statement released through a representative.
Singer Peter Gabriel hailed Shankar as an inspiration who "opened the door to non-western music for millions of people around the world."
"He was very serious about his music, and I remember at one WOMAD performance, he stopped the music to ask his audience not to point their feet at him as that was seen as offensive in India," Gabriel said in a statement. "He was also warm, witty and mischievous as a man. He will be badly missed."
Even actress Pamela Anderson weighed in tweeting one of Shankar's music videos.
In Bangladesh's bloody war of separation from Pakistan in 1971, Shankar and Harrison launched what UNICEF calls the first massive fund-raising pop event, The Concert for Bangladesh, to generate donations for the flood of refugees pouring into India.
Later, from 1986 to 1992, Shankar put his politics into practice as a member of India's upper house of parliament, the Rajya Sabha, or state assembly, serving with India's current Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
"It was difficult, often, to judge what was more remarkable -- the man or his music," Singh said of Shankar on Wednesday. He praised him as one of India's "most effective cultural ambassadors."
Both houses of parliament observed a moment of silence in his honor.
Shankar's musical career had a long life before and after the '60s. He was born on April 7, 1920, and when he and Harrison met, he was already 46 and famous in India as a classical musician, according to his record label biography.
His classical career outlived his counterculture fame, but he continued to meld East with West and composed concertos, which harmonized his sitar with orchestras. He played duos with American classical violin maestro Yehudi Menuhin and composed with American minimalist Philip Glass. He also wrote film music for the Hollywood movie "Gandhi."
Shankar kept homes in the United States and India.
Despite ill health, he shared a stage with his daughter Anoushka, also a sitar virtuoso, in early November.
It was his last public performance.

The Voice on 12-12-12 shuts downTrevin Hunte

'The Voice' Results: And Then There Were Three

 Trevin Hunte on "The Voice"

It seems like just yesterday we were being introduced to this season's wannabe "Voice" contestants during the blind-audition rounds, and now we've nearly reached the finale of the singing competition's third season. Only one contestant was sent home Tuesday (December 11) after Monday's "musically perfect" performance episode, which left three contestants to battle it out in one more live performance round before the winner is announced. Sweet-as-pie, teddy-bear crooner Trevin Hunte from Team Cee Lo was sent packing, leaving Nicholas David, Terry McDermott and Cassadee Pope in the competition.

Get More: Music News

"Thank you for pushing me, motivating me," Hunte said to his coach, expressing gratitude for how he learned to stretch and explore his vocal abilities. "I love you, Cee Lo. I will always love you. I'm just happy to be here."
Moments before the names were announced, coach Cee Lo expressed his sadness over having to lose one of these two loveable men, as Hunte and David were the bottom two.
"I hate seeing you two pitted against each other," he said. "You have my love respect and loyalty going forward. May the best man win."
Is Cassadee Pope a "mortal lock" to win "The Voice"?

Speaking to the happy moments on the show, Team Blake finalists McDermott and Pope kicked off the evening's performances with a duet/cover of "Little Talks" by the Icelandic folk/Indie band Of Monsters and Men, who, as luck would have it, were actually in the house to watch the performance, which they enjoyed, judging by their enthusiastic applause after the fact.
Tuesday's show was bursting with "Voice" alumni performances. Juliet Simms turned the show into a full-on rock concert with a theatrical, Joan Jett-esque performance of her single "Wild Child." The onetime Team Cee Lo member, who is still being managed by her coach, told host Carson Daly she was happy to be back on the stage and advised the contestants to try and live in the moment and be proud that they've made it this far. Simms' showstopper was followed by blond country songbird RaeLynn, the former Team Blake member, who slowed things down a bit with her slightly saucy new single "Boyfriend." Finally, we were treated to the powerful pipes of former Team Christina member Chris Mann, who performed his power ballad "Roads."
The final performance of the evening was from Team Cee Lo, Trevin Hunte and Nicholas David went somber and sentimental on the Mariah Carey classic "Hero."

Changing the world is a hard task, especially when it is for the good. With most of us ourselves disadvantaged growing up, and a strong will for education, it was a no-brainer for us to form a high school grant to provide a means of helping fund youth in school who wish to someday go to college or trade school for a chance at a brighter future.

2012 Justin Bieber Tour

bieber_concert

Click on the image for your favorite beats!!
Justin Bieber's "Believe" tour started four days ago in Glendale, Arizona amid a flurry of Twitter-disseminated controversy, with reports and videos revealing that the 18-year-old singer had vomited onstage during the end of his performance. Fans rushed to support the ailing Bieber, who blamed his upset stomach on a pre-concert meal of milk and spaghetti. Though trite and irrelevant, this highly-publicized bout with nausea served to illuminate the extent to which Justin Bieber has permeated the popular consciousness. He is truly an idol of the Internet age, with every tiny misstep analyzed at warp speed.
Kicking off a two evening run at the Staples Center Tuesday night, the now non-dyspeptic Bieber brought an epic yet strangely incoherent stage show to an adoring Los Angeles crowd. Now in his late teens, the singer has matured both in terms of his vocal register and physical appearance. Most notably, his bowl of golden blonde hair has been replaced by a gelled crew-cut and throughout the performance his wardrobe reflected an urban-inspired attempt at edginess.
Entering from the upper portion of the arena, Bieber was lowered onto the center of the stage wearing a massive pair of charcoal-colored wings. The sheer magnitude of the shrieking audience's reaction was stunning and physically overwhelming. Bieber was quickly joined by a troupe of male backing dancers as the band launched into the uptempo strut of "All Around The World." Fireworks exploded, laser lights shot wildly from the ceiling, confetti fell to the floor and plumes of smoke were released from the bottom of the stage -- all in the show's first five minutes.
As the concert progressed, Bieber established a predictable routine of partially-sung choruses, lightly-choreographed dance moves and crowd-baiting displays of affection. During the introduction for "Too Young For Love," Bieber showcased his vocal range in a wordless improvisation that set the heavily youth-skewed audience ablaze. Early hits "Eenie Meenie," "One Time" and "Somebody to Love" were crammed into a brisk medley that was performed with relative disinterest from the singer, who seemed much more enthusiastic about the newer tracks.
Stage sets evolved, but a thematic coherence was never established. A melange of narrative storylines were touched upon, including a classic paparazzi-escape sequence and a "Hook"-inspired plunge into a nymph-inhabited sea bed. These plot points were usually used as time-killing filler during Bieber outfit changes and only rarely did they connect to the content of the musical material.
Towards the later portion of the set, Bieber stood aboard a mechanical crane that rotated throughout the circumference of the arena. He performed two acoustic tracks, "Be Alright" and "Fall," the latter of which found Bieber accompanying himself on acoustic guitar and singing with great emotion and tonal precision. Without the pomp and glitz, his talent is unquestionable and the acoustic tracks allowed for a welcome respite from the sensory overload that characterized the evening.
Bieber was joined by two guest performers during the set -- opener Carly Rae Jepsen for the breezy, acoustic-lead "Beautiful" and Jaden Smith for a rapped verse during the fiery "Never Say Never." A two-song encore comprised major hits "Boyfriend" and "Baby," after which Bieber thanked his fans and stated: "Go home tonight and do what you love, and be the best at it." His ambition has never been in question, but a greater thematic focus would go a long way toward helping Bieber reach the level of maturity for which he strives.
